Citizenship Coordinator

Valley Immigrant Advocates (VIA) is an immigration legal services office created to assist immigrants to find paths to stability, residency, and citizenship. VIA’s work includes direct legal services to residents, education and outreach to immigrant communities and local service providers, and community education on immigration issues. We are a recently formed not-for-profit organization staffed by committed professionals, and we’re excited to expand our team.

This position is on-site at VIA’s office in Ottawa, IL. It is not a virtual position. It requires travel in the employee’s own vehicle. Some evenings and weekends required.

This position is salaried at 50% of full time, or may be offered, at VIA’s option, with another currently available 50% of full-time position of Law Office Program Assistant, to create a single full-time position. Starting salary for this half-time position is $18,500 but could be higher depending on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

  • Coordinate VIA’s citizenship events
  • Screen clients and assist them in preparing to apply for naturalization
  • Maintain client files, prepare program reports
  • Work with VIA’s partner organizations to inform potential clients of available services
  • High degree of fluency in English and Spanish, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work well and effectively in a diverse workplace with clients and staff from various cultures and varying levels of English proficiency
  • Commitment to expanding immigrant participation in our society, understanding of immigrant issues
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to plan workflows, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, problem solve, and meet deadlines
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher) and familiarity with the internet and social media
  • Ability to work in a busy office where interruptions are frequent
  • Prior administrative or office experience preferred
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred but not required

This position is in a law office. Maintaining confidentiality and security of all information, including client identity and information, is required by law.
